The Group of Seventy-Seven (G77) was established on June 15, 1964 in accordance with the "Joint Declaration of Seventy-seven Developing Countries" issued at the end of the first session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) ,Geneva.

It was established to articulate and promote the collective economic interests of its members and to strengthen their joint negotiating capacity on all major international economic issues within the United Nations system.

The Group of 77 is the largest intergovernmental organization of developing countries in the United Nations, providing countries with the means to express and promote their collective economic interests, and enhancing the ability of countries to negotiate jointly on all major international economic issues within the United Nations system.

G77 membership has expanded to 134 member countries, but the original name has been retained due to its historical significance.

The Chair rotates by region (Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean) for one-year terms.
