The European Parliament is the legislative body of the European Union.

From February 1, 2020, the European Parliament has a total of 705 seats, compared to 751 seats before the UK's withdrawal from the EU on January 31, 2020 (EU treaties allow maximum seats).

27 of the UK's 73 seats have been reallocated to other countries, while the remaining 46 seats will be reserved for possible future expansion.

Under the 1976 electoral law, EU countries must notify the European Parliament of the list before the formal start of delegation.

How does the European Parliament work?

The work of the Council is divided into two main phases:

  1. Committee to prepares legislation.
    Parliament has 20 committees and two subcommittees, each responsible for a specific policy area. Committees review legislative proposals, and MEPs and political groups can propose amendments or propose to veto bills. These issues are also being debated within political groups.
  2. Plenary session

    At this point, all MEPs gather in the House of Representatives for a final vote on proposed legislation and proposed amendments. Usually held four days a month in Strasbourg, but sometimes there are additional meetings in Brussels.
